A blonde woman in an elegant gold dress looked up in annoyance—
then froze.
Beside her stood a trembling little girl in oversized dirty clothes, her tiny hands shaking from fear and hunger.
“I think this belongs to you.”
The woman slowly picked up the watch.
The moment her fingers touched it, they started trembling uncontrollably.
“Where did you get this?”
The little girl swallowed hard, trying not to cry.
“My mommy kept it.”
Silence slowly spread through the luxury restaurant.
The woman pressed the latch open.
Click.
Inside was a faded photograph of a young mother holding a newborn baby.
Every bit of color disappeared from the elegant woman’s face.
She stared at the child like she was looking at someone impossible.
“What was your mother’s name?”
The little girl’s lips shook violently.
“Eva…”
The woman nearly dropped her wine glass.
Tears flooded her eyes instantly.
The child began crying softly.
“Before Mommy died…”
Her tiny voice cracked apart.
“…she told me to find the lady in gold.”
The woman leaned closer across the candlelit table, completely shattered now.
“What did she say?”
The entire restaurant felt frozen.
The little girl took one trembling breath.
“She said…”
A painful pause.
“…you are my—”
The screen cut to black before the final word came out.
