“After doctors told me another pregnancy could kill me, my husband and I buried our dream of ever having a daughter and focused on raising our three boys. Then, eleven years into our marriage, James called me to a maternity ward where a newborn girl was waiting, and the secret he had kept from me made me realize that baby had not appeared in our lives by accident.

“I need you to come to the hospital.”

James sounded strange.

“Why?”

“There’s a baby here.”

I stopped wiping the kitchen counter.

“James, whose baby?”

“Please. Just come.”

Twenty minutes later, I walked into the hospital wearing the same old shirt I had been cleaning in.

The word baby meant something complicated in our house.

We had three sons.

Nine, seven, and four.

Wild, noisy, wonderful boys who filled every corner of our home.

But we had always dreamed of a daughter.

I had even chosen her name when I was nineteen.

Then, after our third son was born, my doctor gave us the news.

Another pregnancy would probably kill me.

Not might.

Probably.

I asked whether there was any safe option.

“No.”

I asked again months later.

Same answer.

Eventually, James took my hand.

“Our boys need their mother more than we need a daughter.”

So we stopped talking about her.

Mostly.

There was still a box in our garage filled with newborn clothes.

Every few months, I suggested donating it.

James always said the same thing.

“Next month.”

Next month never came.

I thought grief simply made him sentimental.

Until that Tuesday.

James was waiting at the end of the maternity corridor.

His coat was still on.

His eyes were red.

In eleven years of marriage, I had never seen my husband cry.

Behind him was a hospital room.

Through the glass, I could see a plastic bassinet.

And inside it was a newborn girl.

Tiny.

Wrapped in pink and white.

“James.”

My voice shook.

“Tell me why I’m here.”

He looked toward the baby.

Then at me.

“I need you to sit down.”

“No. Tell me.”

His hands trembled.

“There’s something I have to ask you.”

My stomach tightened.

“About her?”

He nodded.

“And I need you to hear everything before you decide what happens next.”

I stared at the little girl.

“Who is she?”

James closed his eyes.

When he opened them, tears were running down his face.

“I’ve known this day might come since before I married you.”

I actually stepped backward.

“What did you just say?”

He reached toward me.

I pulled away.

Then a nurse appeared carrying a sealed envelope.

“Mr. Carter?”

James turned pale.

She handed it to him.

“I was instructed to give you this only if the baby came here.”

James stared at the envelope without opening it.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because written across the front, in handwriting I didn’t recognize, were six words:

FOR JAMES AND THE WIFE HE CHOSE.
