Full part: “We already sold the house. Here are two hundred dollars. Find a cheap room on the outskirts and don’t make a scene.”

While I was giving birth, my husband secretly sold my $3 million house and, when I returned with our baby, handed me $200: “Rent a cheap room and leave.” I looked at the money, laughed, and called my lawyer. He still had no idea he had made a much bigger mistake.

PART 1

“We already sold the house. Here are two hundred dollars. Find a cheap room on the outskirts and don’t make a scene.”

Christopher left the envelope on the table as if he had just done me a favor.

I had given birth less than three days earlier. My daughter Harper was sleeping against my chest, my entire body hurt, and I could barely stay on my feet. Beside him, my mother-in-law Brenda watched me with her arms crossed and a look of satisfaction that turned my stomach.

“You can still find cheap rooms around Scranton,” she added. “With a baby, you don’t need any great luxuries.”

I opened the envelope.

Two hundred-dollar bills.

I looked at the money. Then I looked at Christopher.

And I started laughing.

It wasn’t a nervous giggle. I laughed until my abdomen hurt.

Christopher frowned.

“What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing.”

“Then what are you laughing at?”

I held up the bills.

“I’m laughing because you think these two hundred dollars can get me out of a house worth three million.”

Brenda took a step toward me.

“That house isn’t yours anymore.”

“You’re right about that.”

Christopher smiled, thinking I had finally accepted defeat.

“Then stop making things difficult.”

I looked him straight in the eyes.

“But there’s one small problem. The house you just sold had already…”

I stopped.

Christopher’s smile disappeared.

Brenda pressed her lips together.

“Had already what?” he asked.

For the first time in many months, I saw fear in his eyes.

Three weeks earlier, I still thought our marriage could be saved.

Christopher and I had been married for seven years. We lived in a two-story residence in Harrisburg, in a quiet neighborhood where the neighbors knew one another and children rode their bikes in the afternoons.

The property had belonged to my father.

When he died, he left it exclusively to me. Over the years, I invested in renovations, expanded the kitchen, redid the garden, and turned that house full of memories into the home where Christopher and I planned to raise our daughter.

I called it “our house.”

Legally, it had never been his.

Everything changed during my pregnancy.

Christopher started asking strange questions.

“How much do you think it’s worth now?”

“Where do you keep the original deed?”

“Did your dad leave any conditions in the will?”

Then Brenda started doing the same thing.

One afternoon, while we were having coffee, she looked around the dining room.

“A property like this can cause problems between a married couple.”

“What problems?”

“Well… one person having everything and the other having nothing.”

“Christopher has never said that bothers him.”

Brenda smiled.

“Maybe because he’s too proud to admit it.”

Days later, I found Christopher going through the filing cabinet in my father’s study.

When he saw me, he slammed a drawer shut.

“What are you looking for?”

“An insurance document.”

“That drawer contains documents for the house.”

He didn’t answer.

The next morning, I called Rachel Cooper, the lawyer who had handled my father’s estate.

After reviewing everything, she was clear:

“Nora, Christopher cannot sell this property. It is solely in your name.”

Then I asked her a question.

“What if I sell it?”

Rachel stared at me in silence.

“Are you sure?”

I placed one hand on my belly.

“I need to start a life where no one thinks they can take what belongs to me while I’m distracted taking care of my daughter.”

Two weeks before giving birth, I signed the sale.

A married couple of business owners legally purchased the property. The money was protected in accounts solely in my name.

Christopher never found out.

Three days later, I overheard a conversation between him and Brenda in the garage.

“We have to lower the price a lot,” she was saying.

“It doesn’t matter,” Christopher replied. “When Nora is in the hospital, she won’t even notice.”

I felt like the world had stopped.

Then Brenda asked:

“And when she comes back with the baby?”

Christopher let out a dry laugh.

“We’ll give her some cash and let her figure out where to stay.”

I put a hand over my belly.

That was when I realized they weren’t acting on impulse.

They were planning to leave me without a home precisely while I was giving birth.

And they still had no idea that the house they were betraying me over already belonged to someone else.

What happened next was far worse than either of them could have imagined.
