My husband handed his entire $180,000 paycheck to his mother, then smirked at me and said, “From now on, you’re on your own!” I didn’t argue. I canceled every meal I paid for and blocked my cards. That night, when he demanded dinner, I served him an empty plate. He laughed—until he discovered what else I had canceled. His face went pale, and his mother suddenly had nothing to say…
PART 1

“Starting today, my entire ten-thousand-dollar monthly paycheck goes to my mother! And you, Paige, can figure things out with your own money!”
Grant tossed the words out as he dropped his SUV keys onto the marble table.
His mother, Dolores, smiled with satisfaction from the armchair.
“That’s my boy! You finally understand who’s been there for you your whole life. Wives come and go, but you only get one mother.”
Paige slowly raised her eyes.
She had been married to Grant for seven years, and for the last four they had lived in a beautiful home in an exclusive neighborhood of Scottsdale. Her husband had just been promoted to regional sales manager. He would earn ten thousand dollars a month, and he was convinced that made him the most important man in the family.
“And who’s going to pay the household expenses?” Paige asked.
Grant laughed. “Don’t start with your accounting. You work too. Pay for your own things and let my mother manage my money.”
“Does that include groceries, utilities, and the takeout you two order every single day?”
“Oh, you’re so dramatic!” Dolores cut in. “You’d think it bothers you that my son loves me.”
Paige looked at her mother-in-law. Dolores wore a designer blouse, an expensive watch, and freshly done nails. All of it had come, one way or another, out of Paige’s pocket. Neither of them seemed to remember that.
“Fine,” Paige said. “Starting today, everyone takes care of their own.”
Grant smiled in triumph. “Glad you understand your place.”
Paige went upstairs without arguing. Once in her room, she opened her banking app and went through the additional cards Grant used for restaurants, shopping, and gas.
She deactivated them.
Then she canceled the prepared-meal service that arrived at the house every day. She also cancelled the weekly gourmet grocery order that included prime cuts, imported seafood, and all of Dolores’s indulgences.
For years she had paid for it all to avoid arguments. That afternoon she understood that her generosity had turned into an obligation in everyone else’s mind.
At nine that night, Grant walked into the dining room. The enormous table was completely bare.
“Paige! Where’s dinner?”
She was sitting there reading a book. “I already ate.”
“What do you mean you already ate? What about us?”
Paige stood, took a white plate from the china cabinet, and set it in front of her husband.
“Ask your mother. She has your ten thousand dollars. I’m sure she can buy you something to eat.”
Grant slammed the table. “I’m your husband! You’re obligated to take care of me!”
“And you told me to support myself with my own money. That’s what I’m doing.”
Furious, Grant opened a delivery app and ordered nearly two hundred dollars’ worth of food. When he tried to pay, a red notification appeared:
TRANSACTION DECLINED.
He tried again. Same result.
“Paige, unblock my card!”
“It isn’t your card, Grant. It’s mine.”
Then Dolores appeared. “What’s all this commotion?”
“Mom, I need money for dinner!”
She looked away. “Son, I was actually about to tell you something. I put down a six-thousand-five-hundred-dollar deposit on a diamond necklace. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Grant froze…
