The luxury Washington townhouse was supposed to be empty. Sunlight spilled through tall windows onto designer floors, toys lay scattered across the elegant living room, and a hidden phone camera shook slightly as Daniel stepped quietly through the front door. Then joyful children’s laughter burst through the house. He froze instantly. “No…” he whispered, realizing he wasn’t alone.
More laughter echoed down the hallway. The camera followed him faster now, footsteps hitting wood floors as toy sounds and blanket rustles grew louder. From the living room, Rosa’s playful voice rang out. “Mission countdown begins!” Two toddlers screamed with laughter. Daniel rushed closer. The camera whip-panned into the room. A blanket fort covered half the living room. Rosa lay on the rug wearing giant yellow gloves, lifting both twins high into the air like airplanes.

“Captain Leo! Captain Mateo!” she shouted. The boys laughed so hard they could barely breathe. Daniel stopped cold in the doorway. His face changed completely. The control he always carried vanished as tears filled his eyes. One twin spotted him first and squealed, “Da-da!” Both little boys reached toward him—then turned back to Rosa first, arms open for her. Daniel looked shattered by what he saw. In a broken whisper, barely able to breathe, he said, “They laugh… with you.” Rosa slowly lifted her eyes to meet his as the room fell silent.
