The Invitation He Never Should Have Sentv

Nine months after my divorce, my ex-husband called me from California to invite me to his wedding.
I was sitting beside the window of my hospital room in Portland, Oregon, holding my newborn daughter against my chest.
She was less than twenty-four hours old.
My ex-husband, Grant Mercer, had no idea she existed.
“I thought you should hear it from me,” he said. “Mallory and I are getting married next month.”
I looked down at my daughter, Wren, sleeping beneath a pale blue blanket.
Then Grant added the sentence he had probably been waiting months to say.
“And Mallory is pregnant. I’m finally going to have the family I always wanted.”
For five years, Grant had blamed me because we could not have children.
He had watched me walk into appointment after appointment, watched hope disappear from my face, and somehow turned every disappointment into evidence that I had failed him.
Eventually, I believed him.
Then he left me for another woman.
Now, while our daughter slept in my arms, he was calling to celebrate the fact that another woman was carrying his child.
I could have told him immediately.
Instead, I asked, “Why are you inviting me?”
