“Doctor, please, save my husband! Our baby can’t be born without his father!”

During my night shift, an ambulance brought in my husband covered in bl00d. Behind him came a woman who was five months pregnant, screaming, “Doctor, please save my baby’s father!” Everyone knew we had been married for five years. I took off my wedding ring, slipped it into my scrub pocket, and kept treating him, until one phone call to my mother-in-law revealed something even worse.
PART 1
“Doctor, please, save my husband! Our baby can’t be born without his father!”
The woman screaming in front of me was about five months pregnant.
The unconscious man lying on the stretcher, covered in bl00d and connected to a monitor, was my husband.
My name is Camille Bouchard. I was thirty-four years old and had spent eleven years working as an emergency physician at a hospital in Montreal. I had seen horrific accidents, devastated families, and patients d:i:e right in front of me. After all those years, I thought nothing could make me lose my composure.
I was wrong.
That October night, the rain was coming down in sheets. Just before midnight, we received word that a thirty-five-year-old man was being transported after crashing into the back of a semi-truck.
As the paramedics rushed through the doors, I heard them call out:
“Dominic Tremblay, thirty-five years old. Head trau:ma, possible abdominal bl:ee:ding, open fracture of the right leg. Bl00d pressure dropping.”
Dominic Tremblay.
My husband of five years.
Three hours earlier, he had sent me a message.
“Baby, the rain is awful. Drive carefully when you get off work. I left vegetable soup in the fridge. I love you.”
And now he was lying in front of me, somewhere between life and death.
For a few seconds, everything around me disappeared.
Then my training took over.
At that moment, Dominic could not be my husband.
He was just a patient.
“Two IV lines. Get bl00d ready. Call general surgery, trauma, and neurosurgery. Now!”
His abdomen was rigid, his pupils were responding poorly, and his right leg was badly fractured.
“We can’t wait any longer. Get him to the operating room.”
That was when the woman came running in.
She was soaked from the rain. Her makeup had run down her face, and she held one hand protectively over her stomach as she cried.
She grabbed Dominic’s stretcher.
“Don’t let him d:i:e!”
I told her to let go.
She didn’t even seem to hear me.
“Doctor, he’s my husband. We’ve been waiting for this baby for months. Please!”
The entire emergency room went silent.
Everyone I worked with knew Dominic.
He had picked me up from the hospital countless times. He had brought food for the staff during Christmas. On Nurses Day, he had even sent coffee for everyone.
And they all knew Dominic Tremblay was married to me.
The woman looked at him again.
“Dominic promised he would be there when our son was born.”
Something inside me shattered.
But the monitor kept showing his bl00d pressure dropping.
I looked straight at her.
“If you really want him to live, let go of the stretcher and leave this room.”
She obeyed.
As we pushed Dominic toward the operating room, one of his hands fell to his side.
He was still wearing our wedding ring.
I looked down at mine.
I took it off.
I didn’t throw it.
I didn’t scream.
I simply slipped it into my scrub pocket and kept walking.
The surgery lasted nearly seven hours.
Once they finally stabilized him, the head of the emergency department removed me from his medical team.
“Camille, you’re his wife. This is where your involvement ends.”
“Probably not for much longer.”
He held my gaze.
“But you still are.”
When I stepped outside, the pregnant woman was still waiting.
“Doctor… is Dominic going to live?”
“What’s your name?”
“Giselle.”
“Did Dominic tell you he was single?”
Her face changed.
“He told me he was separated.”
I took out my phone and showed her the message Dominic had sent me that same night.
“I love you.”
Giselle went pale.
“He told me he had a business dinner tonight…”
“It looks like he lied to both of us.”
A few hours later, I called my mother-in-law, Vivienne, to tell her about the accident.
When I mentioned Giselle and the pregnancy, I expected to hear sh0ck.
Instead, Vivienne went silent.
Far too silent.
That was when I understood.
“You already knew.”
My mother-in-law took several seconds to answer.
“Camille… let me explain.”
I felt colder than I had when I first saw Dominic covered in bl00d.
Because suddenly, I realized that maybe my husband wasn’t the only person who had been lying to me for months.
And I still had no idea what I was about to discover.
