My daughter sliced into her gender reveal cake and suddenly burst into tears. Moments later, the baker quietly pulled me aside and revealed something that changed everything.
My daughter Chloe had waited four painful years for this pregnancy, enduring two losses and three unsuccessful treatments before finally carrying a healthy baby. When it came time for the gender reveal, she wanted something simple with family, a few close friends, and a cake filled with either pink or blue.
As far as we knew, only the bakery knew the baby’s gender. So when Chloe finally pressed the knife through the white frosting, everyone crowded closer to see the first slice.
She lifted it out.
The filling was pink.
“It’s a girl!”
Everyone around us reacted with excitement, but Chloe did not. She simply stared at the cake for several seconds before tears began running down her face.
Spencer immediately wrapped his arms around her.
“We’re having a daughter.”
“I know.”
Something about the way Chloe answered unsettled me. She did not look overwhelmed with happiness or relief.
She looked worried.
That was when I noticed the baker standing near the gate to our backyard. She had personally delivered the cake that morning, but now she was watching Chloe with an expression that made me uneasy.
When she realized I was looking at her, she quickly motioned for me to come over.
“I need to show you something.”
“What?”
“Not here.”
She led me toward her delivery van and pulled out her phone. Once we were away from the other guests, she lowered her voice.
“Your son-in-law came to the bakery this morning.”
I frowned.
“Spencer?”
“Yes. He told us the envelope from the doctor contained the wrong result.”
My stomach tightened immediately.
“How would he know that?”
Instead of answering, she opened the bakery’s security footage on her phone. The video clearly showed Spencer standing at the counter earlier that morning, but he was not alone.
A woman I had never seen before stood beside him holding another sealed envelope. She handed it across the counter while Spencer remained beside her.
The baker looked embarrassed.
“They offered us five hundred dollars to replace the original result with this one.”
I glanced back toward the party. Spencer was still standing beside Chloe with his arms around her as though nothing unusual had happened.
“Then what’s the baby’s real gender?”
The baker hesitated.
“That isn’t why I pulled you aside.”
She zoomed in on the unfamiliar woman standing beside Spencer.
“She came back after he left.”
I stared at the screen.
“And?”
The baker lowered her voice even further.

“She asked me to attach something underneath the cake board.”
We immediately hurried back toward the patio table. I placed both hands beneath the cake board and carefully lifted it… The story continues in the first comment
