My wedding night seemed absolutely perfect until my new husband leaned close and whispered, “If you knew what I had really done, you wouldn’t still be wearing that ring.” The following morning, I found something hidden inside his tuxedo pocket that made me scream.

I first met Lucas at the hospital after I was involved in a terrible car accident.

When I regained consciousness, my left leg was wrapped in a cast, and I had stitches across my forehead. The doctors carefully warned me that there were parts of that night I might never remember.

Lucas was one of the nurses assigned to my floor.

He was never supposed to become someone important in my life, but somehow, that was exactly what happened.

He always seemed to pay just a little more attention to me than he did to the other patients. Sometimes, I would catch him standing in the doorway watching me, almost as though he were waiting for something to come back to me.

It should have made me uncomfortable. Instead, I kept telling myself there had to be a simple reason for it.

He liked me.

And if I was completely honest with myself, I was beginning to like him too.

A few months after I was released from the hospital, Lucas proposed to me. I said yes.

Our wedding was everything I had ever dreamed it would be.

Almost.

Because Lucas was behaving strangely.

During dinner, his hand was shaking so badly that wine spilled over the edge of his glass.

Later, while our guests were dancing, I found him by himself on the terrace, staring out into the darkness. He was drunk and could barely keep himself upright.

“What’s wrong with you tonight?” I asked.

There wasn’t even a trace of a smile on his face.

“If you knew what I really did,” he whispered, “you wouldn’t be wearing that ring.”

I stood completely still.

“Lucas…”

“I should have told you before we got married. I was selfish. I kept thinking that if I waited long enough, maybe it wouldn’t matter anymore.”

Before I had the chance to ask him what he meant, he collapsed onto the floor. Between the exhaustion and all the champagne he had been drinking, he was asleep within minutes.

But once we made it to the bedroom, I could barely close my eyes.

His words kept replaying inside my head until the sun came up.

I tried to reassure myself that he was simply drunk and had no idea what he was saying.

The next morning, while Lucas was still asleep, I started collecting our clothes from the floor.

His tuxedo jacket was draped over a chair.

When I picked it up, something heavy moved inside the inner pocket. At first, I assumed it was our marriage certificate.

Then I pulled it out.

My fingers instantly went numb.

“No…” I whispered.

There was something inside that pocket that Lucas should never have possessed.

The moment I realized what he had actually been hiding from me, I screamed.
