My husband died three years ago. But yesterday, my 7-year-old granddaughter pointed at a man in the supermarket and screamed, “Grandma! That’s the man who sleeps in your bedroom when you’re not home!”

I live alone. And when I checked my security camera that night, I saw something that made my blood run cold.

My name is Helen. I’m 63 years old.

My husband, Richard, died in a car accident three years ago. Since then, I’ve lived alone in the same house where we raised our children.

Or at least, I thought I lived alone.

Last Saturday, I took my granddaughter, Lily, grocery shopping.

We were walking past the frozen foods when she suddenly stopped.

Her little hand tightened around mine.

“Grandma, look!”

She pointed at a tall man wearing a gray jacket.

“That’s him!”

“Who, sweetheart?”

“The man who sleeps in your bed!”

I froze.

“What man?”

Lily looked confused.

“The one who comes when you go to work. He told me not to tell you.”

My heart started pounding.

Before I could ask another question, the man turned around.

I nearly dropped my shopping basket.

He looked exactly like Richard.

My dead husband.

Same eyes.

Same scar above his eyebrow.

But when he saw me, his face changed.

He abandoned his cart and hurried toward the exit.

I wanted to follow him, but Lily began crying.

“Grandma, please don’t let him see us!”

That evening, I opened the security camera app on my phone.

I hadn’t checked the recordings in months.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then I found footage from Thursday.

11:43 a.m.

My front door opened.

A man walked inside.

He used a key.

He wasn’t wearing a mask.

It was Richard.

I watched him walk upstairs, enter my bedroom, and open the bottom drawer of my dresser.

He removed a small wooden box.

The box containing my husband’s ashes.

Then he sat on my bed and began crying.

I covered my mouth.

But what happened next terrified me even more.

He pulled out his phone and made a call.

The camera recorded his voice.

“She still doesn’t know. But the little girl saw me.”

A pause.

Then he whispered:

“We have to move the body before Helen finds out who was really buried.”

I couldn’t move.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

It was my daughter.

“Mom,” she whispered, sounding terrified, “are you alone?”

“Yes. Why?”

“Lock every door. Right now.”

“What’s happening?”

She started crying.

“Mom… I just received a photograph of Dad.”

My stomach dropped.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know. But he’s standing outside your house.”

I slowly turned toward the living room window.

Someone was standing on my porch.

Then came three knocks.

A familiar voice called out:

“Helen, open the door. I can explain everything.”

I backed away, shaking.

But then my daughter screamed through the phone:

“MOM, DON’T OPEN IT! THAT’S NOT DAD! THE REAL DAD IS STANDING RIGHT HERE WITH ME!”

And at that exact moment, someone behind me whispered:

“She’s telling the truth.”
