“Don’t cry like that, Abigail. I’m leaving for us, not to get away from you.”

I saw my husband off at the airport while he told me, “I’m doing all of this for us.” I pretended to cry and watched him walk toward his flight, unaware that I had already discovered his mistress, the hidden transfers, and over 8 million dollars at risk. I didn’t confront him about anything; I simply went to the bank. Hours later, his first phone call confirmed that my real problem was much worse.

PART 1

“Don’t cry like that, Abigail. I’m leaving for us, not to get away from you.”

Brandon Vance said it with impeccable calm, as if he were going out to buy bread rather than saying goodbye for two years at Gate 4 of the Salt Lake City International Airport. He wore a navy blue coat, carried a brand-new suitcase, and held his phone face down in his hand.

Abigail looked at him with moist eyes. She seemed devastated.

Exactly as he expected.

For months, Brandon had repeated the same story: a Canadian company had hired him to supervise projects in Vancouver; the salary would be extraordinary, and the sacrifice would secure their future.

But Abigail already knew there was no contract, no Canadian company, and no temporary apartment.

There was a woman.

Clarissa Bennett, thirty-three years old, worked at the accounting firm that managed the accounts for “Abigail’s Haven,” the home decor shop that Abigail had built over twelve years. Clarissa knew about movements, suppliers, and passwords. She also knew Brandon far too well.

Three nights earlier, he had left his computer open while taking a shower. A message popped up on the screen:

“My love, remember to look sad in front of Abigail. The more she believes it hurts you to leave, the longer she’ll take to check the accounts.”

Then others followed.

“London confirmed.”

“Hotel paid for three nights.”

“As soon as we land, try to move the rest.”

And an even worse one:

“She’s too naive. She’ll cry at the airport and then sit around waiting for months.”

Abigail didn’t scream or confront him. She sat down and kept reading.

Over the next seventy-two hours, she stopped acting like a wife and started thinking like the owner of her own life. She copied conversations, downloaded bank statements, photographed invoices, consulted a lawyer, and hired a private investigator. She also confirmed that, since they were married under a separation of property agreement, the house inherited from her parents and the capital from a land sale in Tucson remained solely her assets.

Meanwhile, she cooked dinner for Brandon, asked if he had packed enough clothes, and even bought him medication for the flight.

He believed he was brilliant.

“Are you going to call me?” Abigail asked at the airport, wiping away a tear.

“Of course. At first, I might not be able to answer much because of work.”

His phone screen lit up. Brandon quickly flipped it face down.

Abigail managed to catch a glance of a “C.”

She didn’t need anything more.

Minutes later, he kissed her on the forehead.

“I love you.”

“I love you too,” she replied.

It was the last lie she gave him.

Brandon passed through security and disappeared behind the glass doors. Abigail waited until she could no longer see him. Then she dried her face, squared her shoulders, and pulled out her phone.

There was a message from the investigator:

“Confirmed. Clarissa is traveling on the same flight to London. They are pretending not to know each other. I have photos.”

Abigail replied: “Document everything until they board the plane.”

She checked the time: 9:38 AM.

At 11:00 AM, she had an appointment at the bank. At 1:00 PM, with her lawyer. After that, she would revoke Brandon’s access and permissions at the company.

When she got into the taxi, she received a text from him:

“I miss you already. Stay strong.”

Abigail genuinely smiled.

In a few hours, Brandon would discover that his cards no longer worked and that the funds he thought were available were secured.

But not even Abigail could imagine yet that the airport betrayal was only the beginning of something much darker.
