Across the sidewalk, sitting against a wall on soaked cardboard, was a homeless veteran he hadn’t seen in forty years.
“WAIT!”
People turned as the general rushed through the rain and dropped to his knees in front of the old man.
“I looked for you… I swear I did…”
The veteran stared at him calmly.
“No… you didn’t, sir.”
The general’s face broke apart.
“But I forgive you anyway.”
Crowds stopped filming as the powerful military hero began crying openly in the street.
Then the homeless veteran slowly pulled an old war photo from his torn coat.

A young general stood beside him in the picture.
The veteran looked him directly in the eyes.
“You still don’t remember what happened that night… do you?”
The general’s face drained white.
